Target Beauty Box April 2016 Review

target 4.16 box

The Target Beauty box is a non-subscription beauty box that is released once a month and sells out very quickly. Prices for the box range from $5 to $10 with free shipping and it always has a great assortment of hair, face, body, and makeup items. This box was $7.

t416 insert1Each box comes with a double sided insert. One side announces the theme of the month. This month’s theme is items that will get you ready to head outside. After the long winter, I think this box is brilliant and I can’t wait to use the items as an excuse to finally turn off Netflix and face the outside world.

The other side of the insert describes all of the products and gives a $3 off $15 beauty purchase at Target. Unlike other inserts, it unfortunately does not list the size or the price of the items sent.

Maybelline Dream Velvet Gel Whipped Foundation (Foil Sample with $2 off coupon)

Target often sends out full sized makeup products in their beauty boxes and when I saw the spoiler for the box I thought this would be a full sized. I was very disappointed to be wrong. It has a great texture but the color is off for my skin tone. I may consider buying the full sized bottle with the coupon if I finish any of my foundations or tinted moisturizers any time soon.

Rating: 2/5. Foil samples always feel like a rip off. This would also have been better if it has a couple different colors so the consumer could compare.

t416 skin trioMarlowe Body Butter No. 22 1 oz worth $1.25

I have never heard of the Marlowe brand before but it has all of these antioxidants and plant extracts to nourish the skin which is always good. The smell is interesting (in a good way) and although it comes out thick, it absorbs quickly and leaves skin feeling really soft and not greasy at all.

Rating: 5/5. I’m happy about this new discovery. Always nice when a lotion gets to work quickly so you don’t have to sit around waiting for it to dry.

CeraVe Healing Ointment 2.5 grams worth $1

If I didn’t know better I would guess that this is Aquaphor balm or Vaseline. It’s mostly petrolatum (what vaseline is made of) and is meant for healing dry, cracked, or chafed skin. It’s a good product but I feel like it would be more useful in a winter box than a spring one.

Rating 3/5. If you own aquaphor or vaseline, you really don’t need this and I have both.

Hawaiian Tropic Island Sport Spf 30 Lotion 2 oz worth $2

Target beauty boxes usually come with a travel sized sunscreen which is great because if I’m going somewhere hot for 2 or 3 days, these mini bottles are a blessing. This one is oil-free and water resistant and also smells like heaven.

Rating 5/5. The smell, the size, the formula, so useful and perfect!

t416 maskLaneige Water Bank Soothing Mask value $4.80

Laneige is a Korean cosmetics brand which has extremely hydrating products that are suitable for daily use for those with even the most sensitive skin. They have been in the last 3 Target boxes and will probably be in the next ones too. This mask is technically a sheet mask but it is a little different from the usual sheet masks in that it is 2 parts instead one. This is actually great because sometimes the sheet mask holes don’t line up perfectly with my face but this fixes all that and leaves your skin so soft.

Rating 5/5. Refreshing, moisturizing, and well thought out.

t416 mu duoPantene AirSpray HairSpray 1 oz worth $1

This hairspray is so lightweight that my hair didn’t look or feel stuck (like some hairsprays) and it was easy to brush out when I changed my style later on in the day. It also smells very pleasantly floral. Since I rarely wear hairspray (my thick curly hair holds any shape you put it in) I passed it along to my fine-haired mom who loved it.

Rating 5/5. Leaves hair looking so light and bouncy. Miles away from traditional hairspray (heyy aquanet).

Covergirl Colorlicious Lipstick in 277 Kiss of Peach (full size) $6

Colors vary in boxes but this color is a shiny satin peach shade. The color was gorgeous in the tube but the formula was so unflattering that I had to give this to my best friend who can rock any lipstick (she prefers to layer it over a matte nude for the perfect texture).

Rating 2/5. It’s so silky and shimmery that it looks metallic and doesn’t last on the lips at all. Also it has a very chemically smell which I’m not fond of considering how much lipstick ends up being ingested.

t416 simpleSimple Cleansing Facial Wipes 7 wipes worth about $1.25

These are my holy grail. I have about 5 packages of the 25 count because I saw them on sale when I went to London (they were about $2 compared to about $7 per package in NY) and lost all control. No regrets though as these are the greatest. They are strong enough to remove waterproof everything and  gentle enough to not irritate my eyes when I use them for the 8th day in a row. They have no scent and don’t need to be rinsed off.

Rating: 5/5. These are great and this small size will be useful for travel.

Overall, this box has a value of about $17 which is on the low end for Target boxes. Out of the 8 items received:

*Gone immediately: Maybelline Foundation sample – tested & tossed; LaNeige Water Bank Mask – used, loved, reused next day before it dries up, tossed.

*Put in storage:

**for travel: Hawaiian Tropic Sunblock ; Simple cleansing facial wipes.

**for next winter: CeraVe Healing ointment ; Marlowe Body Butter

*Given away: Pantene Airspray Hair Spray ; Covergirl colorlicious lipstick.

*Added into rotation: 0.

Liking 4/8 (sunscreen, sheet mask, body butter, cleansing wipes) items is good for these kind of boxes. I don’t regret ordering it and look forward to the next one.
