Sephora Play! is a monthly beauty subscription from everyone’s favorite makeup heaven available in the US for $10 + free shipping.
You get 6 samples, a Play! booklet, and an instore Play! pass. Since it is not customizable, every June Play! box is the same.
The samples come housed in a cute drawstring bag. This one is very plain compared to last month’s so let’s hope they step it up for July.
This month’s theme is The Minimalists which I am all about (yay makeup minimalism!). The included booklet advocates that Effortless is More with next level nudes and no maintenance naturals. It also tells you to download the Sephora app for exclusive Sephora Play! content.
The information booklet unfolds into a bonanza of explanation, instructions, and tips for every product. I like how it’s more than just why it was selected for this box or the history of the product.
Tocca Florence Perfume Vial
According to Sephora’s website, this perfume was inspired by the beauty and elegance of Parisian women. It is scented with Italian Bergamot, Violet Petals, Blue Iris, and Blonde Wood to evoke memories of old-world Paris. I personally have no memories of old world Paris, but this perfume does smell very romantic and pleasant. I just wish it was a spray instead of a vial.
Bumble & Bumble Don’t Blow It 0.5 oz worth $3.10
This is my first Bumble & Bumble Product and it was most certainly worth the hype. Basically, you apply this to wet hair, either braid or twist it (if you have frizzy hair), and allow to air dry. The result is smooth hair full of body and waves. It turned my frizzy floof of curls into beach waves so I am very impressed. If I ever go finish my haircare stash, this is the first product I would buy.
Tarte Tarteguard spf 30 Sunscreen Lotion 0.23 oz worth $4.33
I love this lotion. I got the same sample in Macy’s Summer Spf bag in May and everything about it is great. It smells nice, feels great on the skin, doesn’t break me out, and has a pump. It’s also in a glass bottle which is significantly more luxe feeling than all of the other travel sized sunscreens in their thick plastic tubes and jars.
Benefit They’re Real Mascara 0.1 oz worth $8
I wish subscription boxes would stop sending this mascara out, this is probably my 5th one from the last 2 years. I personally dislike this mascara as it makes my lashes bend and break. I will be passing this on.
Bareminerals Bareskin Liquid Bronzer 0.1 oz worth $2.80
It was pretty cool to try a liquid bronzer for the first time. It goes on sheer but it can also be used to warm up foundation, make moisturizer more glowy, or add a sunkissed glow. Swatched below.
Becca Backlight Priming Filter 0.2 oz worth $7.60
This illuminating primer multitasks as a highlight, blurring primer, eyeshadow, or lip enhancer. It is fairly shimmery but if you blend well, it can be very pretty for daytime as well as the perfect candlelit highlight for nighttime. Swatched below.
As you can see, even though both products go on looking fairly intense, a little goes a long way and they both blend really well to give a subtle look. I’m in love with that highlight color though, look at the sheen! So pretty.
Overall, this was a great box with a value of $25.83 (not counting the perfume because perfume vials don’t deserve to be counted). While this might seem like a low value for a $10 subscription box, the actual items more than made up for it. I got to try some products that were completely new to me and even fell in love (hey Bumble & Bumble cream), which ultimately is what subscription boxes are for.
